Battle of the Books is a new club advised by Ms. Baker, our librarian. Students will meet during their grade level lunch times every other Friday. Students are tasked to read 20 award-winning middle school aged books. They take notes and study trivia about the books to compete in our school competition. The 4 students of this team who score the best will then go on to represent our school against other schools all around the state of Wisconsin in a final battle during the last week of February. Chorale is an opportunity for musicians in 7th and 8th grades to come together to sing.  We'll be performing music that we don't normally get the chance to do in our regular choir: jazz, blues, a cappella, musical theater, & madrigals.  We rehearse on Thursday mornings at 7:15 am (If there is a snow day or late start, we will NOT meet).  We perform at Taste of Jazz, Applied Arts Night, our annual spring tour concert, and Music Awards Night.

The Fiddle Band is a group that studies and performs fiddle music fromm around the world.   The music includes American, Irish, Latina American, Scandinavian, and other traditions that include string instruments . In addition to the orchestra instruments, students also join the group playing guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and percussion.

Students work with teams to research assigned topics and work through a 6 step problem solving process to identify and address issues and challenges related to those topics.  It is a great way to encourage creative thinking and allow students to think outside of the box.  

Teams of four students work on Practice Problem 1, Practice Problem 2, and the Qualifying Problem (QP).  Qualifying teams will be invited to the State Bowl in April. Teams that place first in each division at the State Bowl are eligible for the International Conference in June.

Game Club is a welcoming space for students to explore their passion for various types of board games and card games. It fosters positive social relationships, encourages good sportsmanship, and helps students develop strategic thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. This club provides an opportunity to unwind, connect with peers, and engage in friendly competition in a supportive and fun environment.

Game Club starts in December, and will run through March, and meets in the library every Thursday from 3:25  to 4:30.  Members are allowed to bring a snack, but no snack will be provided. Feel free to bring your own games and also invite your friends! Students must sign up to join. You can obtain a permission slip from Ms. Baker for the first night. A code of conduct must also be completed prior to attending.

MHMS Jazz Band is an extracurricular music group that plays in the style of a jazz big band. We use saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section with piano, bass, guitar, and drumset. However. . . if you play flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn, baritone, or tuba, and are interested in Jazz Band, we can arrange music for you to play in the group.

All instruments are welcome in MHMS Jazz Band!
Jazz Band meets every Wednesday morning at 7:00AM, and performs for Taste of Jazz, Applied Arts Night, the Middle School Jazz Festival, and the Middle School Awards Night every year. We perform music in several music genres, from swing and blues to latin and funk, rock, and pop!

Knitting club provides a fun and relaxing environment for students to learn the art of knitting or improve their existing skills. Students enjoy the process of creating beautiful and functional items while developing fine motor skills, patience, and concentration. It's a great opportunity to connect with peers, share creative ideas, and even contribute to community service projects.

Knitting Club will meet every Thursday after school in the art room from 3:30 pm  - 4:30 pm (clean up begins at 4:20 pm). The last Knit Club meeting will be the end of March.

Students in grades 5-8 with high ability in math and an interest in math competitions are encouraged to try out to become a part of one of our district Math Teams.  Our Math Teams go on to the regional level Math Meet each spring and compete with top math students form surrounding districts.  The top two teams at regionals move on to the Mega Math Meets and compete against students from all over Wisconsin.

A 5th-6th grade team is made up of 4 top Math students from 5th grade and 4 top math students from 6th grade, and an alternate from each grade.  A 7th-8th grade team is made up of 4 top Math students from 7th grade and 4 top math students from 8th grade, and an alternate from each grade.  Practices will begin in February and this year's Math Meets will be held in April.  Meetings may take place before school or during Viking Hour- schedules will be provided to the team members. Students who are interested should look for information in the announcements about meeting with Ms. Powell during Small Group Time.

Science Olympiad is an extracurricular activity for grades six through eight. The team meets on Mondays (3:30-4:30 p.m.) from late October until the State Tournament. The team members prepare as event teams for competitions, such as the Regional Competition in the winter and the State Tournament in the spring. There are more than 20 events that pertain to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, technology, and engineering. Most of all, Science Olympiad is fun!

The Mount Horeb Middle School Student Council is a group comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.  Not only is student council a voice of the larger student body, it's also a service oriented group.  The majority of student council's time is spent planning and organizing school events and fundraisers, in addition to promoting school spirit.
