Welcome to Mount Horeb Middle School! At Mount Horeb Middle School, our mission is simple yet profound: to ensure high levels of academic and social/emotional learning for all students and staff. Serving roughly 500 students in grades 6–8, we are dedicated to providing a safe, positive, and rigorous learning environment where every young mind can thrive.

The House System: A Supportive Transition

To bridge the gap between elementary and high school, each grade level is organized into two distinct Houses. This structure allows students to experience the independence of moving between classes throughout the day, while keeping them in a smaller, tight-knit community of shared peers and teachers. Each House consists of a dedicated core team of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers, alongside various applied arts teachers. Placement is not based on academic performance, and both grade-level Houses follow the exact same high-quality, district-approved curriculum. Not only does this approach allow students to feel part of a smaller community within our larger building, but it also gives our teachers the opportunity to regularly collaborate, look at data, and deeply address the specific academic and social/emotional needs of every shared student.

Exploring Passions & Electives

We believe middle school is a prime time for students to explore new interests and discover their passions. For this reason, we offer an exploratory rotation in both sixth and seventh grade that includes Technology Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Art, and General Music. As students progress through middle school they are given the opportunity to begin learning a world language and select from a variety of advanced applied arts courses. Additionally, physical education and music are a regular part of our students' daily lives. We are incredibly proud of our highly successful music program, which offers Band, Choir, and Orchestra to all students. Unlike many middle schools, our flexible scheduling allows student musicians to elect to participate in all three music ensembles simultaneously if they choose.

Culture, Climate, and Character

We are committed to honoring the whole child by blending behavioral excellence with daily social and emotional support. We continue to explicitly teach and reinforce positive behavior through our building-wide PBIS framework, which mirrors the expectations taught at the elementary level. This system focuses on helping students make responsible, respectful, and ready decisions for their learning and actions. To ground these habits, we kick off every single morning with an advisory period known as Viking Hour. This intentional time is structured to build a positive school climate, support daily social/emotional development, foster deep staff-student rapport, and help students support their own individual academic progress.
